Philippians 1:10

That ye may approue things that are excellent, that ye may be sincere, and without offence till the day of Christ. Philippians 1:10 (KJV)

Context: The book of Philippians was written by the Apostle Paul while he was imprisoned, most likely in Rome. He wrote this letter to the believers in the city of Philippi, expressing his love and gratitude for their support. In this particular verse, Paul is sharing his prayer and desire for the Philippians to live in a manner that brings glory to God until the day of Christ.

Paul prays that the Philippians would discern and recognize what is truly excellent or of the highest value in God’s eyes. He wants them to have a clear judgment, recognizing and approving things that align with God’s will and purposes. This requires wisdom and spiritual insight to distinguish between good and best according to biblical principles, emphasizing the importance of discernment and making wise choices based on Scripture.

The word “sincere” in Greek (eilikrines) means “pure” or “genuine.” Paul desires the Philippians to live authentically, without hypocrisy or deceit, with actions and motives aligned with truth in their relationship with God and others. Such a life reflects a genuine heart that is consistent and honest before God.

Paul encourages them to live in a way that avoids causing others to stumble or be offended. This involves sensitivity to others’ weaknesses and avoiding behaviors that could hinder the Gospel or create unnecessary barriers for those around them. Living without offence means conducting oneself so as not to hinder the message of Christ or cause unnecessary stumbling blocks for others.

The phrase “till the day of Christ” refers to Christ’s future return and final judgment. Paul emphasizes that the Philippians’ conduct should consistently reflect God’s kingdom values throughout their lives until that day, regardless of challenges or opposition they may face. Their character should maintain sincerity and avoid offence, bearing witness to the kingdom even in the face of difficulty.
