Philippians 1:16

Listen to this article

“The one preach Christ of contention, not sincerely, supposing to add affliction to my bonds.”

Context:The book of Philippians is a letter written by the apostle Paul to the believers in Philippi. In this particular verse, Paul is addressing a situation where some individuals are preaching about Christ but with impure motives.

Paul refers to those who are preaching Christ out of contention or rivalry. It means that they are teaching about Jesus and His message, but their intentions are not genuine. They may be seeking personal gain or trying to create divisions among the believers.

Preaching Christ of Contention:Paul refers to those who are preaching Christ out of contention or rivalry. It means that they are teaching about Jesus and His message, but their intentions are not genuine. They may be seeking personal gain or trying to create divisions among the believers.

Lack of Sincerity:Paul further emphasizes that these individuals are not preaching sincerely. Their motives are not driven by a genuine desire to share the Gospel and build up the body of believers. Instead, they may be using the opportunity to advance their own agendas or cause strife.

Supposing to Add Affliction:The individuals mentioned in this verse not only preach Christ insincerely but also have the intention to add affliction to Paul’s bonds. It implies that they aim to cause more trouble for Paul, who is likely in prison at the time of writing. They may be hoping to exacerbate his suffering or hinder his ministry further.

Paul’s Perspective:Despite the presence of these contentious preachers, Paul maintains a positive outlook throughout the book of Philippians. He expresses joy and encourages the believers to focus on the true message of the Gospel, even in the midst of difficult circumstances.

Lessons to Learn:

  • a. Genuine Motives: This verse reminds us to examine our motives when we share the message of Christ. It is essential to preach and teach with sincerity, seeking to honour God and build up others, rather than seeking personal gain or causing division.
  • b. Discernment: We should develop discernment to recognize those who preach with impure motives. Not everyone who claims to represent Christ does so genuinely. We need to be cautious and evaluate the teachings and actions of those who proclaim the Gospel.
  • c. Focusing on the Gospel: Despite the presence of contentious preachers or difficult circumstances, like Paul, we should maintain our focus on the Gospel. The message of Christ is powerful and life-transforming. It is the central truth that should guide our lives and interactions with others.
  • d. Joy in Difficulties: Paul’s attitude of joy in the midst of trials challenges us to find joy and contentment in Christ, regardless of the circumstances. Rather than being disheartened by the presence of false teachers or other challenges, we should rejoice in the Lord and continue to spread His message of love and salvation.

Remember, a comprehensive study of the Bible should include reading the entire chapter and understanding the surrounding verses to gain a deeper understanding of the context.
