Philippians 2:7

Posted on 18 May at 14:29
Listen to this article

“But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men.”

Context:Philippians is one of the epistles written by the apostle Paul. It was written while Paul was imprisoned, most likely in Rome, and addressed to the church in Philippi, a city in Macedonia. The letter emphasizes unity, joy, and humility in the Christian life.

The Self-emptying of Christ:Philippians 2:7 highlights the humility and self-sacrifice of Jesus Christ. It describes how Jesus willingly chose to set aside His divine privileges and take on the form of a servant, being made in the likeness of men. This verse reveals the depth of Christ’s love and His willingness to identify with humanity in order to fulfill God’s plan of redemption.

Making Himself of No Reputation:The phrase “made himself of no reputation” signifies that Jesus voluntarily emptied Himself of His divine glory and rights. Though He was fully God, He chose not to cling to His exalted status but instead humbled Himself for the sake of humanity. Jesus didn’t consider equality with God something to be exploited or grasped but willingly laid it aside to accomplish the Father’s will.

The Form of a Servant:Jesus took on the role of a servant, demonstrating humility and servanthood throughout His earthly ministry. He came not to be served but to serve and give His life as a ransom for many (Matthew 20:28). By taking the form of a servant, Jesus exemplified the perfect example of humility, teaching His disciples the importance of selflessness and sacrificial love.

Made in the Likeness of Men:Jesus, being fully God, willingly took on human flesh and became like us in every way, except without sin (Hebrews 4:15). He experienced the limitations, challenges, and temptations of human existence. By becoming human, Jesus could identify with our struggles and offer Himself as the perfect sacrifice for our sins, bridging the gap between God and humanity.

Lessons and Application:

  • Humility:Philippians 2:7 teaches us the importance of humility in our lives as followers of Christ. We are called to imitate Jesus by setting aside our own reputation, serving others, and considering their needs above our own.
  • Servanthood:Just as Jesus took on the form of a servant, we are also called to serve one another in love. Serving others with humility and love demonstrates the character of Christ and brings glory to God.
  • Sacrifice:Jesus’ self-emptying and sacrifice on the cross teach us the value of self-sacrifice. We are called to deny ourselves, take up our cross, and follow Him (Matthew 16:24), being willing to lay aside our own interests for the sake of others.
  • Unity:The context of Philippians emphasizes the importance of unity within the church. By imitating Christ’s humility, we can maintain unity and harmony among believers, putting aside selfish ambition and considering others as more important.

As you study and meditate on Philippians 2:7, may it encourage you to embrace humility, sacrificial love, and a servant’s heart, following the example of our Lord Jesus Christ.
