Proverbs 1:23

Posted on 18 May at 11:22

Turne you at my reproofe: behold, I will powre out my spirit vnto you, I will make knowen my wordes vnto you. Proverbs 1:23 (KJV)

The Book of Proverbs is a collection of wisdom literature in the Old Testament that offers practical advice and guidance for living a righteous and fruitful life. Proverbs 1:23 belongs to the introductory section where wisdom is personified as a teacher calling out to the simple and the foolish, urging them to listen and gain understanding. The opening appeal, “turn at my reproof,” conveys a clear invitation to respond with humility and a teachable spirit. Reproof, meaning correction or rebuke, requires the listener to acknowledge mistakes, accept correction, and turn away from the wrong path.

The verse then promises that God will pour out His spirit to those who heed this call. In the Old Testament context, the outpouring of the Spirit signifies divine empowerment, guidance, and revelation. The Holy Spirit enables believers to comprehend and apply God’s Word, making the wisdom of the ages accessible to a receptive heart. Following the outpouring, God declares that He will make known His words to those who respond. This underscores the desire of God to reveal His truth and wisdom, allowing individuals to gain insight into His ways and receive direction for their lives.

Application of this teaching is straightforward: we are urged to be open to correction and instruction, to cultivate a humble and teachable spirit, and to turn from foolish ways. The familiar proverb that “the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom” (Proverbs 9:10) is reinforced here. When we submit to God’s reproof, the Holy Spirit illuminates Scripture, enabling us to live according to God’s will and to experience the blessings of a righteous life. In sum, Proverbs 1:23 calls us to humility, receptivity to divine correction, and reliance on the Spirit’s guidance so that God’s words may be made known and our lives transformed.
