Proverbs 10:5

Listen to this article

“He that gathereth in summer is a wise son: but he that sleepeth in harvest is a son that causeth shame.”

Proverbs 10:5 (KJV):He that gathereth in summer is a wise son: but he that sleepeth in harvest is a son that causeth shame.

Proverbs is a book in the Old Testament known for its collection of practical wisdom, and Proverbs 10:5 is no exception. This verse presents a contrast between two types of individuals and their approach to work and responsibility.

The Wise Son:The first half of the verse states, “He that gathereth in summer is a wise son.” Here, the imagery of gathering in summer refers to engaging in diligent work and seizing opportunities when they arise. The summer season in an agrarian society was crucial for planting, cultivating, and harvesting crops. A wise son recognizes the importance of working during the appropriate time, taking advantage of favourable circumstances, and being industrious. This person understands the value of preparation and planning for the future.

The Son that Causeth Shame:The second half of the verse states, “but he that sleepeth in harvest is a son that causeth shame.” In contrast to the wise son, this portion portrays an individual who neglects their responsibilities. The reference to sleeping in harvest suggests laziness, negligence, or an unwillingness to seize opportunities. Such behaviour is seen as a cause of shame because it disregards the importance of fulfilling one’s duties, neglecting the provisions that could have been obtained, and potentially burdening others.

The underlying message of Proverbs 10:5 is about the importance of diligence, responsibility, and seizing opportunities. It encourages individuals to work diligently during favourable times, making the most of the resources and opportunities available. Neglecting responsibilities and failing to act when the time is right can lead to missed blessings, unfulfilled potential, and ultimately, shame.

This proverb can be applied to various aspects of life beyond the agricultural context. It highlights the significance of recognizing and acting upon opportunities for growth, success, and personal development. Whether in work, relationships, or personal goals, being attentive, proactive, and diligent is essential to achieving positive outcomes and avoiding regret.

Overall, Proverbs 10:5 serves as a reminder to embrace wisdom, seize opportunities, and fulfil our responsibilities diligently, ultimately leading to a fruitful and honourable life.
