Proverbs 11:4

Posted on 18 May at 11:22

Riches profite not in the day of wrath: but righteousnesse deliuereth from death. Proverbs 11:4 (KJV)

This phrase emphasizes the temporary nature of material wealth. While wealth can provide temporary comfort and security, it is of no value in times of divine judgment or calamity. When God’s judgment comes, riches cannot save a person from the consequences or grant them eternal life. The day of wrath refers to a time of divine judgment when individuals are held accountable for their actions.

Here, righteousness refers to a state of moral uprightness and conformity to God’s commands. It implies living a life characterized by justice, integrity, and obedience to God’s will. The verse suggests that righteousness, in contrast to worldly wealth, is what truly matters. Righteousness is a means of deliverance from death, both in a physical and spiritual sense. It is through a righteous life that a person finds favor with God and receives His salvation.

This verse reminds us that earthly wealth is transitory and cannot secure our ultimate salvation. It is the pursuit of righteousness, rather than the accumulation of riches, that holds eternal significance. It echoes the teachings of Jesus, who said, “For what does it profit a man to gain the whole world and forfeit his soul?” (Mark 8:36, ESV).

In summary, Proverbs 11:4 emphasizes the importance of righteousness as a means of deliverance from death, highlighting the temporal nature of worldly riches. It encourages us to prioritize a life of moral uprightness and seek God’s favour rather than solely focusing on material wealth.
