Proverbs 12:2

A good man obtaineth fauour of the Lord: but a man of wicked deuices will he condemne. Proverbs 12:2 (KJV)

Proverbs is a book of wisdom in the Old Testament, traditionally attributed to King Solomon. It offers practical advice on moral conduct, relationships, and the pursuit of wisdom, and often sets the righteous and the wicked in stark contrast. Proverbs 12:2 belongs to a collection that highlights this contrast.

The phrase “A good man obtaineth favour of the LORD” points to divine favour or grace bestowed on the upright. The Hebrew word rendered “favour” can also mean “grace” or “acceptance,” indicating the Lord’s benevolence and kindness toward those who seek Him. This favour is not earned by personal achievement but is granted by God, manifesting as blessings, guidance, and protection for a heart that pursues His ways.

In contrast, “but a man of wicked devices will he condemn” describes a person who plots evil and engages in deceitful schemes. Such wicked devices bring about divine condemnation and judgment, underscoring that those who plan and execute harmful actions will face the Lord’s disapproval.

The verse therefore draws a clear line between the paths of righteousness and wickedness. The righteous receive the Lord’s favour and acceptance, while the wicked encounter condemnation and judgment. This dichotomy reinforces the ultimate destiny of each way.

Integrity is highlighted as essential; believers are urged to live honestly, avoiding deceit and wicked plotting. The passage reminds us that our actions have consequences and that God holds each person accountable for their choices. By choosing righteousness and honesty, we align ourselves with God’s will.

The text also calls believers to trust in God’s just judgment. Though the success of the wicked may be visible, God’s justice will prevail in due time. Trusting in His righteous judgment prevents discouragement and affirms confidence in His ultimate fairness.

Overall, Proverbs 12:2 encourages believers to pursue righteousness and integrity, relying on God’s favour while trusting His judgment against wickedness. Our choices matter, and a life aligned with God’s principles brings blessings and acceptance in His sight.
