Proverbs 12:23

Posted on 18 May at 15:10

“The heart of the wise teacheth his mouth, and addeth learning to his lips.”

Context:Proverbs is a book in the Old Testament known for its practical wisdom and teachings on various aspects of life. It was primarily written by King Solomon, known for his exceptional wisdom.

This verse highlights the importance of wisdom in controlling one’s speech. It begins by emphasizing the heart of the wise. In biblical terms, the heart represents the innermost being of a person, including their thoughts, desires, and motives. The verse suggests that a wise person’s heart instructs their mouth.

The verse continues by stating that the wise person adds learning to their lips. This indicates that the wise not only teach but also continue to learn themselves. They strive for knowledge and understanding, constantly seeking to improve their understanding and ability to communicate effectively.

Throughout the book of Proverbs, there is an emphasis on the power of words. Wise speech is valued and encouraged, as it can bring forth positive outcomes, build others up, and promote understanding. The wise person exercises discretion and chooses their words carefully, recognizing the impact they can have on others.

  • Practical Application:Practically applying this verse involves several steps:
  • – Cultivate a heart of wisdom: Seek God’s wisdom through prayer, studying His Word, and seeking counsel from mature believers.
  • – Guard your speech: Think before you speak, considering the impact your words may have on others. Let your words reflect kindness, truth, and encouragement.
  • – Pursue learning: Engage in ongoing study of Scripture, read books and resources that enhance your knowledge and understanding, and remain teachable.
