Proverbs 13:11

Listen to this article

“Wealth gotten by vanity shall be diminished: but he that gathereth by labour shall increase.”

Context:The book of Proverbs is a collection of wise sayings and teachings attributed primarily to King Solomon. It offers practical guidance on various aspects of life, including wisdom, righteousness, relationships, and wealth. Proverbs 13:11 specifically addresses the acquisition of wealth.

Vanity and Diminishing Wealth:The verse begins by highlighting the consequences of acquiring wealth through vanity. Vanity refers to actions or efforts that lack true value, integrity, or moral foundation. It could include deceit, dishonesty, exploitation, or unethical practices. The verse suggests that wealth obtained through such means will ultimately diminish or dwindle away. This serves as a caution against pursuing wealth through dishonest or unscrupulous methods.

Gathering by Labor:In contrast to acquiring wealth through vanity, the verse encourages gathering wealth through labor. Labor refers to diligent work, honest effort, and ethical means of earning a living. The verse suggests that when one acquires wealth through hard work and honest means, the opposite occurs-rather than diminishing, the wealth increases. This implies that diligent labor is the right path to long-term prosperity.

Application and Lessons:a. Ethical Conduct: The verse emphasizes the importance of ethical conduct and integrity in financial matters. It warns against seeking shortcuts or engaging in dishonest practices to accumulate wealth. Honesty and hard work should be the foundation of our pursuits.

b. Long-Term Perspective: This verse reminds us to adopt a long-term perspective in our financial decisions. It might be tempting to pursue quick gains through questionable means, but true prosperity is more likely to come through patient and diligent labor.

c. Godly Principles: Throughout the book of Proverbs, the underlying principle is that wisdom and righteousness are essential in all aspects of life, including financial matters. Trusting in God’s guidance and adhering to His principles is the key to finding success and avoiding pitfalls.

Additional Scriptures:– Proverbs 10:4 (KJV): “He becometh poor that dealeth with a slack hand: but the hand of the diligent maketh rich.”

– Proverbs 28:19 (KJV): “He that tilleth his land shall have plenty of bread: but he that followeth after vain persons shall have poverty enough.”

– Matthew 6:19-21 (KJV): Jesus teaches about storing treasures in heaven rather than on earth.

In conclusion, Proverbs 13:11 highlights the importance of acquiring wealth through honest labor and ethical conduct. It warns against pursuing wealth through vanity or dishonest means, as it ultimately leads to diminishing returns. The verse encourages us to adopt a long-term perspective and trust in God’s guidance, knowing that true prosperity comes from diligent labor and adherence to godly principles.
