Proverbs 14:26

Posted on 18 May at 15:10

“In the fear of the Lord is strong confidence: and his children shall have a place of refuge.”

Context:The book of Proverbs is a collection of wisdom literature attributed primarily to King Solomon. It provides practical guidance for living a righteous and successful life. Proverbs 14:26 is part of a section that contrasts the ways of the wise and the foolish, emphasizing the benefits of wisdom and the fear of the Lord.

Fear of the Lord:The phrase "fear of the Lord" appears frequently in the Bible and refers to a reverential awe, respect, and obedience toward God. It involves recognizing His sovereignty, holiness, and authority over all creation. The fear of the Lord is the foundation of true wisdom and leads to a godly life.

Strong confidence:The verse states that in the fear of the Lord, one finds "strong confidence." When we fear God and acknowledge His power and goodness, it instills in us a deep sense of security and assurance. This confidence doesn’t stem from our own abilities or circumstances, but from knowing that we are under the care and protection of a loving and powerful God.

Children’s refuge:The second part of the verse highlights a promise to the children of those who fear the Lord. It states, "and his children shall have a place of refuge." This implies that when parents have a healthy fear of the Lord, their children will also experience the benefits of God’s provision and protection. God cares for the righteous and extends His refuge to their offspring, ensuring their well-being.

Application:Proverbs 14:26 encourages us to cultivate a fear of the Lord in our lives. This involves humbly submitting ourselves to God’s will, acknowledging His authority, and obeying His commandments. As we walk in the fear of the Lord, we will find confidence that is not based on worldly circumstances but on our trust in God. Furthermore, our commitment to living in the fear of the Lord can have a positive impact on our children, providing them with a spiritual refuge and setting them on a path toward godly living.
