Proverbs 14:7

Posted on 18 May at 15:10
Listen to this article

“Go from the presence of a foolish man, when thou perceivest not in him the lips of knowledge.”

Context:The book of Proverbs is a collection of wisdom literature attributed to King Solomon. It provides practical guidance for living a wise and righteous life, emphasising the fear of the Lord and the pursuit of knowledge. Proverbs 14:7 addresses the importance of discernment and choosing the company we keep.

Avoiding the Foolish:The verse begins with the admonition to “Go from the presence of a foolish man.” The term “foolish” refers to someone who lacks wisdom, understanding, or discernment. The Bible repeatedly warns against associating with foolish individuals who can lead us astray or negatively influence our behaviour (Proverbs 13:20). It encourages us to exercise discernment and recognise those who lack wisdom.

Discerning Knowledge:The second part of the verse advises us to leave the company of a foolish person “when thou perceivest not in him the lips of knowledge.” This implies that we should assess the speech or words of an individual to determine their wisdom and knowledge. If someone consistently speaks foolishly, lacking understanding or godly wisdom, it is wise for us to distance ourselves from them. The lips that do not reflect knowledge indicate a lack of discernment and can potentially lead us astray.

Application:The verse teaches us the importance of surrounding ourselves with wise and knowledgeable individuals. It highlights the significance of discernment and the influence of our associations. We should strive to be in the company of those who possess godly wisdom and knowledge, as they can provide valuable insights and guidance for righteous living.

  • Spiritual Significance:On a deeper level, this verse reminds us of the need to be cautious about the spiritual influences in our lives. It encourages us to seek out those who have knowledge and understanding of God’s Word and who can guide us in our spiritual journey. By associating with individuals who possess godly wisdom, we can grow in our faith and make wise choices that align with God’s will.

In summary, Proverbs 14:7 advises us to avoid the company of foolish individuals who lack knowledge and wisdom. It emphasises the importance of discernment and choosing our associations wisely. By surrounding ourselves with those who possess godly wisdom, we can grow spiritually and make wise choices in our lives.
