Listen to this article

He that hath knowledge, spareth his words: and a man of vnderstanding is of an excellent spirit. Proverbs 17:27 (KJV)

Context: Proverbs is a book in the Old Testament known for its collection of wise sayings and teachings. The book was traditionally attributed to King Solomon, renowned for his wisdom. Proverbs 17:27 is found within a chapter containing various proverbs that address wisdom, speech, and discernment.

Knowledge and Speech: The verse begins by stating that someone who possesses knowledge exercises restraint in their words. It suggests that a person who is well‑informed and knowledgeable is careful and selective in what they say. Instead of speaking impulsively or excessively, they weigh their words and consider their impact.

Understanding and Spirit: The verse continues by describing a person of understanding as having an excellent spirit. This implies that an individual who possesses discernment, wisdom, and understanding has a noble and admirable character. They demonstrate a positive attitude, demeanor, and disposition, which reflects the qualities of their spirit.

Application: Proverbs 17:27 offers valuable guidance for our speech and character. It encourages us to prioritise knowledge and understanding, leading to a discerning and thoughtful approach to communication. Rather than speaking thoughtlessly, we are called to exercise restraint and consider the impact of our words on others. By doing so, we can cultivate an excellent spirit, displaying wisdom, grace, and humility.

Further Exploration: To gain a deeper understanding of the themes presented in Proverbs, it is beneficial to explore related passages within the book. Proverbs 10:19 emphasises the importance of restraint in speech, stating, “In the multitude of words sin is not lacking, but he that holdeth his tongue is wise.” Similarly, Proverbs 15:28 states, “The heart of the righteous studies how to answer, but the mouth of the wicked pours forth evil.” These verses reinforce the idea that wisdom and understanding should guide our words, leading to positive outcomes.

Remember, a comprehensive study of a biblical passage often involves considering the broader context, exploring related verses, consulting commentaries, and seeking wisdom from trusted spiritual leaders.
