“He that hath pity upon the poor lendeth unto the Lord, and that which he hath given will he pay him again.”

Understanding the Context:Proverbs is a book of wisdom literature in the Old Testament, attributed to King Solomon. It contains practical advice and insights for living a righteous and godly life. In this verse, Solomon highlights the importance of showing compassion to the poor and the promise of divine reward for such acts of kindness.

The Nature of Compassion:“He that hath pity upon the poor” refers to a person who demonstrates empathy and compassion toward those who are in need. This verse emphasizes the significance of caring for the less fortunate, being aware of their struggles, and taking action to help alleviate their suffering.

Lending to the Lord:The verse suggests that when we show kindness and lend a helping hand to the poor, it is considered as if we are lending to the Lord Himself. This concept highlights the divine perspective on acts of charity and implies that God takes personal interest in the welfare of the poor.

Divine Recompense:The latter part of the verse states, “and that which he hath given will he pay him again.” This portion emphasizes the promise of reward or repayment from God for the acts of generosity and compassion we extend to those in need. It implies that God, who sees our actions, will respond and bless those who show kindness to the poor.

Principles and Application:

  • Compassion for the Poor:This verse encourages believers to cultivate a heart of compassion for the less fortunate. It reminds us to be aware of those in need around us and take action to help them in practical ways.
  • God’s Involvement:The verse affirms that when we care for the poor, we are partnering with God in His work of providing for the needy. It acknowledges God’s interest in the well-being of the poor and positions us as His instruments of blessing.
  • Divine Reward:The promise of repayment from God reminds us that acts of kindness and generosity are not in vain. While our motivation for helping others should be genuine love and compassion, this verse assures us that God recognizes our efforts and will bless us accordingly.
  • Stewardship:This verse encourages wise stewardship of our resources. It reminds us that what we have is ultimately from God, and we are called to use it for His purposes, including helping those in need.
  • Eternal Perspective:This verse invites believers to shift their focus from temporary gain to eternal rewards. It reminds us that our acts of compassion have significance not only in the present but also in light of eternity.
