Proverbs 19:20

Listen to this article

“Hear counsel, and receive instruction, that thou mayest be wise in thy latter end.”

Context:Proverbs is a book in the Old Testament known for its collection of wisdom literature. It was written primarily by King Solomon, who is credited with exceptional wisdom granted by God (1 Kings 4:29-31). Proverbs is a practical guide to life, offering insights on various topics such as relationships, work, money, and morality.

Importance of Seeking Counsel:The verse begins with the exhortation to “hear counsel.” Counsel refers to advice, guidance, or wise instruction. It emphasises the importance of seeking wisdom from others who are knowledgeable and experienced. This demonstrates humility and the recognition that we don’t possess all knowledge or have all the answers. Seeking counsel allows us to benefit from the wisdom and perspective of others, avoiding potential pitfalls and gaining valuable insights.

Receiving Instruction:The verse continues with the call to “receive instruction.” Instruction implies being receptive to correction, discipline, and guidance. It involves not only listening to wise counsel but also applying it to our lives. True wisdom comes when we are open to learning, growth, and change. It requires a teachable spirit, where we acknowledge our need for guidance and allow ourselves to be moulded and shaped by it.

Attaining Wisdom:The ultimate purpose of heeding counsel and receiving instruction is to become wise. Wisdom is not merely intellectual knowledge but the ability to apply knowledge and make sound judgments. In this verse, the desired outcome is to be wise “in thy latter end.” This suggests that seeking counsel and receiving instruction in our earlier years can have a profound impact on our future. The choices we make and the wisdom we acquire along the way can shape our character and lead to a more fulfilled and purposeful life.

Application:Proverbs 19:20 encourages us to cultivate a humble attitude and to actively seek wisdom and instruction from trusted sources. Here are some practical applications:

  • Seek godly counsel:Look for wise and experienced individuals who align with biblical principles and values. Seek advice in areas where you lack knowledge or experience.
  • Be receptive to correction:Humbly accept correction or rebuke when it is given constructively. Recognise that it can help you grow and avoid unnecessary mistakes.
  • Be a lifelong learner:Cultivate a teachable spirit and remain open to acquiring new knowledge, skills, and perspectives. Read and study the Bible regularly to gain godly wisdom.
  • Reflect on past experiences:Consider the lessons learned from past decisions and experiences. Use them as stepping stones to grow in wisdom and make better choices in the future.
  • Apply wisdom in decision-making:As you gain wisdom, seek to apply it in practical ways. Make decisions based on godly principles and seek to honour God in all areas of life.

By heeding the counsel of others, receiving instruction with humility, and seeking wisdom, we can grow in character and make wise choices that lead to a purposeful and fulfilled life.
