Proverbs 19:23

Posted on 18 May at 15:23

“The fear of the Lord tendeth to life: and he that hath it shall abide satisfied; he shall not be visited with evil.”

Context: Proverbs is a book of wisdom in the Old Testament, written primarily by King Solomon. It contains practical advice and principles for living a righteous and prosperous life. Proverbs 19:23 is a verse that emphasizes the fear of the Lord and its benefits.

The Fear of the Lord: The phrase “fear of the Lord” refers to a deep reverence, awe, and respect for God. It involves acknowledging God’s sovereignty, holiness, and authority over our lives. This fear is not a terror or dread but rather a loving reverence that recognizes God’s greatness and seeks to obey Him.

Tendeth to Life: The fear of the Lord is presented as a pathway to life. It leads to a fulfilling and abundant existence. When we have a proper fear of the Lord, it impacts every aspect of our lives. It guides our decisions, shapes our character, and influences our relationships. By aligning our lives with God’s principles, we experience the fullness of life that He desires for us.

Abide Satisfied: The verse promises satisfaction to those who possess the fear of the Lord. This satisfaction goes beyond mere material possessions or temporary pleasures. It is a deep contentment that comes from knowing and walking in the ways of God. When we prioritize God’s will and seek to live according to His Word, we find fulfillment and lasting satisfaction that transcends circumstances.

Not Visited with Evil: Another benefit of having the fear of the Lord is protection from evil. This does not mean that those who fear the Lord will never face challenges or difficulties. Rather, it implies that God watches over and preserves His faithful followers. When we revere God and live in obedience to His commands, He guards us from unnecessary harm and keeps us under His divine care.

In summary, Proverbs 19:23 teaches us that cultivating a genuine fear of the Lord leads to a fulfilling life marked by satisfaction and protection from evil. It encourages us to prioritize God’s ways and seek to live in obedience to Him, knowing that He rewards those who honor Him with a rich and abundant existence.
