Proverbs 2:12

Listen to this article

To deliuer thee from the way of the euill man, from the man that speaketh froward things. Proverbs 2:12 (KJV)

The book of Proverbs is a collection of wise sayings and teachings primarily attributed to King Solomon, offering practical guidance for living a righteous and skillful life. Chapter 2 emphasizes the benefits of seeking wisdom and understanding, and verse 12 declares its purpose: to deliver the reader from the way of the evil man and from those who speak froward, or perverse, things.

The term “froward” denotes speech that is deceitful, contrary to what is right, and often manipulative. This highlights the importance of guarding not only against the actions of wicked individuals but also against their harmful words. Such deceptive speech can influence thoughts and decisions, leading believers away from godly principles.

Proverbs 2:12 therefore encourages a proactive pursuit of wisdom and understanding as a means of protection. A discerning mind, coupled with a commitment to godly values, equips believers to recognize and resist the influence of wicked people and their deceitful language.

The surrounding verses make clear that this wisdom is a gift from God to those who earnestly seek it. Believers are called to rely on God’s guidance, cultivating that wisdom through prayer, diligent study of Scripture, and a growing relationship with Him.

The ultimate aim of seeking deliverance from the way of the evil man is the development of godly character. Through wisdom we grow in righteousness, integrity, and discernment, enabling us to make choices that honor God and align with His will.

In conclusion, Proverbs 2:12 calls us to pursue wisdom and understanding so that we may safeguard ourselves from the influence of wicked individuals and their perverse speech. By depending on God’s guidance and cultivating godly character, we can navigate life’s challenges and live in accordance with His principles.
