Listen to this article

“He that goeth about as a talebearer revealeth secrets: therefore meddle not with him that flattereth with his lips.”

Proverbs 20:19 (KJV) says, “He that goeth about as a talebearer revealeth secrets: therefore meddle not with him that flattereth with his lips.”

Understanding the context:The book of Proverbs is a collection of wisdom literature in the Old Testament. It offers practical advice on various aspects of life, including relationships, work, speech, and morality. Proverbs 20:19 addresses the issue of gossip and the consequences of engaging with those who spread rumors or divulge secrets.

Analyzing the verse:

a) “He that goeth about as a talebearer revealeth secrets”: A talebearer or gossip is someone who spreads rumors or reveals confidential information. This person often seeks to create discord, undermine trust, or damage reputations. Proverbs warns against such behaviour because it can lead to strife and harm.

b) “Therefore meddle not with him that flattereth with his lips”: The second part of the verse advises against associating with people who use flattery to manipulate or deceive others. Flattery is insincere praise or excessive compliments aimed at gaining personal advantage or control.

Key lessons and applications:a) Guarding secrets and avoiding gossip: Proverbs 20:19 encourages discretion and integrity in dealing with confidential matters. It cautions against betraying trust by spreading secrets or engaging in gossip. As followers of God, we should value confidentiality, respect privacy, and maintain trustworthy relationships.

b) Recognising the dangers of flattery: Flattery often masks ulterior motives or hidden agendas. We should be discerning and cautious when someone excessively praises us or seeks to manipulate us through insincere words. It is important to focus on the truth, seek genuine relationships, and be aware of the potential harm that flattery can bring.

c) Cultivating truthful and edifying speech: Proverbs emphasises the importance of using our words wisely and responsibly. Instead of engaging in gossip or flattery, we should strive for honesty, kindness, and encouragement in our speech. Speaking the truth in love and building others up fosters healthy relationships and promotes unity.

d) Seeking God’s guidance: Proverbs 20:19 reminds us to seek God’s wisdom in discerning the character and motives of others. By relying on God’s guidance and following His principles, we can make wise choices in our associations and avoid unnecessary harm or pitfalls.

In summary, Proverbs 20:19 warns against engaging with gossipers and manipulators who reveal secrets or use flattery to deceive others. The verse highlights the importance of guarding confidential information, discerning motives, and cultivating truthful speech in our relationships. By following these principles and seeking God’s guidance, we can foster healthy, trustworthy connections with others.
