Proverbs 20:21

Posted on 18 May at 11:22

An inheritance may be gotten hastily at the beginning: but the ende thereof shall not be blessed. Proverbs 20:21 (KJV)

The book of Proverbs is a collection of wisdom literature traditionally attributed to King Solomon. It offers practical advice for living a righteous and successful life, drawing upon God’s wisdom. In this verse the phrase “An inheritance may be gotten hastily at the beginning” points to the acquisition of wealth or possessions quickly, often through means that lack righteousness or proper consideration. It warns that obtaining an inheritance prematurely or without due diligence does not bring lasting favor. The concluding clause, “but the end thereof shall not be blessed,” makes clear that even if one secures material gain swiftly, the ultimate outcome will lack divine blessing and true prosperity.

From this teaching emerge several key lessons. First, the verse underscores the importance of patience and diligence. It cautions against seeking quick gains or shortcuts in acquiring wealth, urging believers to value hard work, integrity, and long‑term planning. Second, it reminds us that genuine blessings come from God, not merely from material accumulation. True favor follows those who pursue righteousness, honesty, and ethical conduct. Third, the passage highlights the necessity of integrity and righteousness in handling wealth. Acquiring and managing resources honestly leads to a blessed end, whereas dishonest or hasty pursuits result in an unblended conclusion.

Applying these truths to our lives involves several practical steps. We should earnestly seek God’s wisdom when making decisions about finances, inheritance, or any significant matter, trusting that His guidance aligns us with His will. We must resist the temptation to use unethical or deceptive means for rapid profit, recognizing that such shortcuts ultimately bring negative consequences. Cultivating patience and diligence—focusing on long‑term goals rather than immediate gratification—allows us to trust that God will bless our faithful efforts in due time.

By studying and applying the lessons of Proverbs 20:21, believers can develop a mindset that values integrity, patience, and righteousness, leading to lasting success and the true blessings that flow from God’s favor.
