Proverbs 20:24

Posted on 18 May at 15:09

“Man’s goings are of the LORD; how can a man then understand his own way?”

Context:The book of Proverbs is a collection of wise sayings and teachings that provide practical guidance for living a righteous and successful life. Proverbs 20:24 is part of this collection and highlights the sovereignty of God and the limitations of human understanding.

Acknowledging God’s Sovereignty:The verse begins by acknowledging that “Man’s goings are of the LORD.” This statement emphasises the sovereignty and control of God over the affairs and paths of humanity. It recognises that every step we take, every decision we make, and every outcome we experience are ultimately directed or allowed by God.

Human Limitations:The second part of the verse raises a rhetorical question: “how can a man then understand his own way?” This question implies that human beings have inherent limitations in comprehending the full scope and purpose of their own lives. Despite our efforts to plan, analyse, and understand our paths, we are unable to grasp the complete picture or foresee the future with certainty.

Trusting in God’s Guidance:Proverbs 20:24 encourages humility and trust in God’s wisdom and guidance. It reminds us that our understanding is limited and incomplete, but God’s ways are perfect and beyond our comprehension. Instead of relying solely on our own understanding, we are called to trust in the Lord and submit our paths to Him, knowing that He has a greater plan and purpose for our lives.

Application:

  • Humility:This verse calls us to recognise our limitations and approach life with humility. We should acknowledge that we don’t have all the answers and that our understanding is limited. This mindset cultivates a dependence on God’s guidance and wisdom.
  • Trust in God’s Providence:We are encouraged to trust that God is in control and has a purpose for every aspect of our lives. Even when we face uncertainty or challenges, we can find comfort in knowing that God is working all things together for our good (Romans 8:28).
  • Seeking God’s Guidance:In light of our limited understanding, we should seek God’s guidance through prayer, studying His Word, and seeking wisdom from mature believers. By aligning our hearts and decisions with God’s will, we can experience His direction and guidance in our lives.
  • Additional Scriptures:
  • Proverbs 3:5-6: “Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.”
  • Psalms 37:23: “The steps of a good man are ordered by the LORD: and he delighteth in his way.”
  • Isaiah 55:8-9: “‘For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways,’ saith the LORD. ‘For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts.’”

In summary, Proverbs 20:24 reminds us of our limited understanding and calls us to trust in God’s guidance and sovereignty. By acknowledging our dependence on Him and seeking His wisdom, we can navigate through life with humility and confidence in His plans for us.
