Proverbs 21:25

Listen to this article

“The desire of the slothful killeth him; for his hands refuse to labour.”

Context:Proverbs is a book of wisdom literature in the Old Testament, attributed mainly to King Solomon. It provides practical guidance for daily living, focusing on topics such as wisdom, righteousness, relationships, and work.

Slothfulness:The verse begins by mentioning the slothful or lazy person. Laziness is often associated with a lack of motivation, initiative, or diligence in performing work or responsibilities. This person has desires but lacks the will to take action.

Consequences of slothfulness:The verse highlights that the desire of the slothful kills them. This can be understood in both physical and metaphorical senses. Physically, laziness can lead to a lack of productivity, financial struggles, and even poverty. Metaphorically, it can lead to a wasted life, missed opportunities, and unfulfilled potential.

Refusal to labor:The second part of the verse explains the reason for the slothful person’s downfall. Their hands refuse to labor, indicating a reluctance to engage in productive work. They may avoid effort, responsibility, or the necessary diligence to achieve success or meet their obligations.

Work ethic and diligence:Throughout the book of Proverbs, there is a strong emphasis on the value of hard work and diligence. Proverbs 10:4 states, “He becometh poor that dealeth with a slack hand: but the hand of the diligent maketh rich.” Diligence, perseverance, and a strong work ethic are commended as virtues that lead to success and prosperity.

Application:This verse encourages us to examine our work ethic and attitudes toward labor. It warns against laziness and the negative consequences it brings. We should strive to cultivate a diligent and responsible approach to our work, whether it is in our careers, studies, household responsibilities, or serving others. By doing so, we can achieve personal growth, contribute to society, and honor God with our efforts.

  • Spiritual application:While the verse primarily addresses physical laziness, we can also draw a spiritual parallel. In our relationship with God, it is important to be actively engaged and diligent in seeking Him, studying His Word, and living out our faith. We should not be spiritually lazy or complacent, but rather strive for spiritual growth and fruitfulness.
