Proverbs 22:28

Posted on 18 May at 15:09

“Remove not the ancient landmark, which thy fathers have set.”

Context:The book of Proverbs is a collection of wise sayings and teachings attributed mainly to King Solomon, known for his wisdom. Proverbs provide practical advice on various aspects of life, including relationships, work, and moral conduct. Proverbs 22:28 focuses on respecting the boundaries and landmarks set by previous generations.

Understanding the verse:

  • "Ancient landmark":In ancient times, landmarks were physical boundaries or markers that delineated property lines. These landmarks were established by previous generations to establish ownership and maintain order.
  • "Remove not":This phrase advises against tampering with or moving these established boundaries.
  • Spiritual principles:
  • Respect for authority:The verse reminds us to honour and preserve the legacy of our ancestors. It encourages a sense of gratitude and respect for the wisdom, values, and traditions passed down to us.
  • Preserving order and justice:The ancient landmarks played a crucial role in maintaining order and justice in society. By not removing them, we contribute to upholding fairness, respecting property rights, and preventing disputes.
  • Practical application:
  • Honouring traditions:We should value and learn from the wisdom of those who came before us. This includes respecting cultural traditions, family values, and moral principles that have stood the test of time.
  • Upholding moral boundaries:Just as physical landmarks maintain order, we should uphold moral boundaries in our lives. This includes adhering to ethical principles, respecting others’ rights, and living with integrity.
  • Learning from history:By studying history and understanding the lessons of the past, we can avoid repeating mistakes and build upon the foundation laid by our ancestors.
  • Related Scriptures:
  • Deuteronomy 19:14: "Thou shalt not remove thy neighbour’s landmark, which they of old time have set in thine inheritance, which thou shalt inherit in the land that the LORD thy God giveth thee to possess it."
  • Proverbs 23:10: "Remove not the old landmark; and enter not into the fields of the fatherless."
  • Matthew 15:4: "For God commanded, saying, Honour thy father and mother: and, He that curseth father or mother, let him die the death."
