Proverbs 22:4

Listen to this article

“By humility and the fear of the LORD are riches, and honour, and life.”

Context:The Book of Proverbs is a collection of wise sayings attributed primarily to King Solomon, known for his wisdom. These proverbs offer practical guidance for living a righteous and wise life. Proverbs 22:4 focuses on the benefits that come from humility and the fear of the Lord.

Humility:Humility refers to a modest and lowly attitude, recognizing one’s own limitations and being willing to serve and submit to God and others. The Bible consistently promotes humility as a virtue, as it opposes pride and arrogance. Jesus Himself exemplified humility during His earthly ministry.

Fear of the Lord:The fear of the Lord is a reverential awe and deep respect for God, acknowledging His sovereignty, holiness, and righteous authority. It involves recognizing that God is all-knowing and all-powerful, and that our lives are to be lived in accordance with His will. The fear of the Lord is not a terror-filled fear, but rather a healthy and awe-filled reverence for God.

Riches:The verse states that by humility and the fear of the Lord, one can attain riches. These riches can be understood in both a material and spiritual sense. Material riches may include financial blessings, possessions, and success, but they should not be the sole focus. Spiritual riches, such as wisdom, knowledge, understanding, peace, and the blessings of God, are of greater value.

Honor:Humility and the fear of the Lord also lead to honour. This honour encompasses a good reputation, respect, and esteem from others. When we humble ourselves before God and align our lives with His ways, we often gain favour with both God and people.

Life:Lastly, Proverbs 22:4 suggests that humility and the fear of the Lord bring life. This life encompasses both physical and spiritual dimensions. By living in obedience to God’s commands and seeking His wisdom, we experience a full and abundant life, both in this world and in the eternal sense.

Overall, Proverbs 22:4 emphasises the importance of cultivating humility and a reverential fear of the Lord in our lives. By doing so, we can enjoy the riches, honour, and abundant life that come from walking in God’s ways. It reminds us that true success is not measured solely by worldly possessions, but by our relationship with God and the impact we have on others.
