Proverbs 22:9

Listen to this article

“He that hath a bountiful eye shall be blessed, for he giveth of his bread to the poor.”

Context:The book of Proverbs is a collection of wise sayings and teachings attributed primarily to King Solomon. It offers practical advice on various aspects of life, including wisdom, relationships, work, and finances. Proverbs 22:9 focuses on the virtue of generosity and the blessings associated with giving to the poor.

Generosity and Blessings:The verse begins with the phrase “He that hath a bountiful eye.” This refers to someone who possesses a generous or liberal spirit, one who is inclined to give willingly. The focus is not only on the act of giving but also on the attitude behind it.

Blessings of Generosity:The verse states that those who have a bountiful eye and give of their bread to the poor will be blessed. This implies that God honours and rewards the generous heart. While the nature of the blessings may vary, they can include spiritual, emotional, or material blessings. The emphasis here is not on giving to receive blessings but rather on the recognition that God often blesses those who are generous.

Giving to the Poor:The specific act of giving mentioned in the verse is providing bread to the poor. Bread symbolises sustenance and basic necessities, indicating the responsibility of caring for those in need. Throughout the Bible, God consistently emphasises the importance of caring for the poor, widows, and orphans, and this verse echoes that sentiment.

Application:Proverbs 22:9 encourages believers to cultivate a generous heart and to actively seek opportunities to help those in need. It reminds us that when we give selflessly and with a cheerful heart, God takes note and blesses us accordingly.

  • Jesus’ Teachings:The New Testament also highlights the value of generosity and caring for the poor. In Matthew 25:34-40, Jesus speaks about the importance of feeding the hungry, giving drink to the thirsty, welcoming strangers, clothing the naked, and visiting the sick and imprisoned. Jesus identifies Himself with the needy and emphasises the eternal significance of caring for them.

In conclusion, Proverbs 22:9 teaches us about the blessings that come from having a generous heart and actively giving to the poor. It encourages us to develop a spirit of generosity and reminds us that God rewards such behaviour. As followers of Christ, we are called to love and care for those in need, imitating the compassion and generosity exemplified by Jesus Himself.
