Proverbs 23:28

Posted on 18 May at 14:10
Listen to this article

“She also lieth in wait as for a prey, and increaseth the transgressors among men.”

Context:This verse is part of a larger section of Proverbs (verses 26-35) that discusses the dangers of immorality and the pitfalls of giving in to temptation. Let’s break down Proverbs 23:28 and explore its meaning in context:

The “she” mentioned here refers to a woman of questionable character or a seductress. The imagery used in this verse portrays her as lying in wait, like a predator waiting for its prey. This indicates her intention to deceive and ensnare unsuspecting individuals who may be enticed by her allure.

The seductress mentioned in the previous line not only seeks to lure individuals into immorality but also contributes to the increase of transgressors or sinners among humanity. Her actions have the potential to lead people astray from righteousness and into sinful behaviour.

In the broader context of this passage (Proverbs 23:26-35), the author warns against the dangers of giving in to sexual temptations and the consequences that follow. The verses caution against being captured by the outward beauty and allure of an immoral person, as their intentions are deceptive and destructive. The author urges readers to exercise self‑control, wisdom, and discernment to avoid falling into such traps.

This passage serves as a reminder of the importance of making wise choices and staying committed to moral and upright living. It highlights the consequences that can arise from giving in to temptation and emphasises the need for discernment when interacting with people who may lead us astray from godly living.

Overall, Proverbs 23:28 serves as a cautionary verse, reminding us to be vigilant, discerning, and wise in our choices and associations. It encourages us to guard our hearts, minds, and actions against those who may seek to deceive us and lead us into transgression.
