Listen to this article

“If thou forbear to deliver them that are drawn unto death, and those that are ready to be slain.”

Context:Proverbs is a book of wisdom literature in the Old Testament, traditionally attributed to King Solomon. It consists of various sayings, advice, and moral teachings. Proverbs 24:11 is found within a section of the book that contains a collection of wise sayings.

Understanding the verse:In this verse, the writer exhorts the reader to act with compassion and justice. The phrase “forbear to deliver them” refers to refraining or withholding oneself from intervening to help or rescue those who are in mortal danger, specifically those who are on the verge of death or being killed unjustly.

  • Ethical responsibility:The verse highlights the ethical responsibility to help those who are in desperate need of assistance. It challenges the reader to consider the consequences of not taking action when someone’s life is in jeopardy. It calls for a response of compassion and a willingness to intervene on behalf of those who cannot defend themselves.
  • Application to modern life:While the immediate context of this verse is unclear, its principle of valuing and preserving human life remains relevant today. It encourages believers to actively engage in acts of mercy, justice, and compassion towards those who are vulnerable and oppressed. This could include efforts to help the poor, support the marginalized, or protect the innocent.
  • Reflecting God’s character:Throughout the Bible, God is portrayed as a compassionate and just God who cares deeply for His creation. Proverbs 24:11 aligns with God’s heart for the vulnerable and oppressed, urging His followers to reflect His character by showing love, mercy, and care for those in need.
  • Christ-centered perspective:As Christians, we can see the ultimate fulfilment of this verse in the life and teachings of Jesus Christ. Jesus consistently demonstrated compassion for the marginalised, healed the sick, and reached out to the outcasts of society. His ultimate act of deliverance was His sacrificial death on the cross, rescuing humanity from the power of sin and death.

In summary, Proverbs 24:11 emphasises the importance of intervening and delivering those who are facing death or unjust harm. It calls for believers to actively engage in acts of mercy, justice, and compassion, reflecting God’s character and the teachings of Jesus Christ. It reminds us of our ethical responsibility to care for the vulnerable and oppressed, bringing hope and help to those in desperate need.
