Proverbs 24:15

Posted on 18 May at 11:21

Lay not waite, (O wicked man) against the dwelling of the righteous: spoile not his resting place. Proverbs 24:15 (KJV)

Lay not wait, O wicked

man, against the dwelling of the righteous; spoil not his resting place: Proverbs 24:15 (KJV)

The proverb is found in the book of Proverbs, a collection of wise sayings traditionally attributed to King Solomon, whose reputation for wisdom is well known in Scripture. Proverbs offers practical guidance on morality, relationships, work, and wisdom for everyday life. In Proverbs 24:15 the verse warns against a wicked person who plots harm against the dwelling of the righteous. The term “dwelling” refers to the home or place of residence of a person of integrity, and the phrase “Lay not wait” means “do not lie in wait” or “do not secretly plan or scheme.”

Protection of the righteous is a central theme: the verse highlights the importance of safeguarding the home, which in ancient times was a place of refuge and security. It reminds us that God is concerned with the well‑being and protection of the righteous and opposes those who plan destruction against His people. Some renderings add the clause “for the LORD loveth not the wicked,” underscoring divine disapproval of such schemes.

Respect for rest is also emphasized. While the KJV text mentions “spoil not his resting place,” the principle can be understood broadly as preserving the peace, tranquility, and refreshment of the righteous. Not disturbing that rest shows consideration for the person’s overall well‑being.

The verse serves as a clear condemnation of wickedness, urging the wicked to refrain from evil intentions. It teaches that malicious actions against the righteous are morally wrong and incur God’s disapproval.

Beyond the literal sense, the proverb can be applied figuratively. It advises believers to avoid targeting or harming people of good character and integrity, encouraging fairness, kindness, and respect in all relationships.

In summary, Proverbs 24:15 calls the wicked to cease plotting against the dwelling and peace of the righteous, stresses the importance of protecting the home and respecting the tranquility of godly people, and offers timeless wisdom that promotes righteousness while warning against wickedness.
