Proverbs 24:20

For there shall be no reward to the evil man; the candle of the wicked shall be put out.

When we look at the world around us, it can sometimes seem as though those who reject God's ways are thriving. They may accumulate wealth, achieve prominent positions, and enjoy apparent success. However, Proverbs 24:20 offers a profound shift in perspective, reminding us of the ultimate destinies of the righteous and the unrighteous.

The Extinguished Candle

In Scripture, a "candle" or "lamp" is frequently used as a metaphor for life, prosperity, and joy. The imagery here is striking: the candle of the wicked shall be put out. While their light may seem to burn brightly in the present moment, it is fundamentally temporary. Their success lacks a lasting foundation and will eventually be extinguished, representing a sudden or inevitable end to their earthly prosperity and a total loss of future hope.

An Eternal Perspective

Books like Job and Ecclesiastes openly grapple with the reality that wicked individuals sometimes live long, seemingly untroubled lives. Yet, the New Testament clarifies this further, explaining that the delay in divine judgment is actually a demonstration of God’s remarkable patience and forbearance, meant to lead individuals toward repentance. For those who remain unrepentant, they are merely storing up wrath for a future day of righteous judgment.

This verse serves as a crucial warning against envying the wicked or growing discouraged by their temporary achievements. The multiplying efforts of the ungodly are like shallowly rooted plants, easily overthrown by the wind. In stark contrast, those who trust in God possess a hope full of immortality. Our ultimate reward is secure in Him, even if we face trials in this present age.

Steadfast Faithfulness

How, then, should we respond when confronted with the prosperity of those who do evil? Our calling is not to harbor envy or bitterness, but to maintain steadfast faithfulness. We are encouraged to continue doing good, extending forgiveness, and trusting that God sees all actions and will repay according to truth.

True riches and lasting legacies are not found in temporal gains achieved through deceit or cruelty, but in righteousness. As believers, we can rest assured in God's perfect justice. We are called to walk in patience, knowing the Lord upholds the righteous and that His light will shine forever, long after the candle of the wicked has faded into darkness.
