Proverbs 26:20

Posted on 18 May at 15:09
Listen to this article

“Where no wood is, there the fire goeth out: so where there is no talebearer, the strife ceaseth.”

This proverb offers valuable wisdom about the impact of gossip and the importance of avoiding spreading rumors or engaging in malicious speech. Let’s break it down further:

"Where no wood is, there the fire goeth out":This phrase draws an analogy between fire and gossip. Just as a fire cannot continue burning without fuel, gossip loses its power and ceases to spread when there is no one to carry it forward. Without the "wood" of gossip, the destructive force of rumors and strife comes to an end.

"So where there is no talebearer, the strife ceaseth":The verse emphasizes the role of a talebearer or gossip in fueling conflicts and strife. When there is no one to spread gossip or engage in malicious talk, the discord and animosity that arise from such behavior come to an end. By refraining from participating in gossip, individuals can contribute to peace and harmony in their relationships and communities.

This proverb encourages believers to exercise discretion and wisdom in their speech. It reminds us of the power our words hold and the potential consequences they can have. By refraining from engaging in gossip and avoiding spreading rumors, we can help prevent strife, maintain healthy relationships, and promote an atmosphere of peace.

In a broader sense, this proverb also teaches us the importance of accountability and personal responsibility. Each individual has the power to choose whether to engage in gossip or refrain from it. By making the conscious choice to abstain from participating in talebearing, we can contribute to a more positive and peaceful social environment.

Overall, Proverbs 26:20 serves as a reminder to be mindful of our words and actions, urging us to avoid contributing to strife and instead pursue peace and harmony in our interactions with others.
