Proverbs 27:9

Posted on 18 May at 11:21

Oyntment and perfume reioyce the heart: so doeth the sweetnesse of a mans friend by heartie counsell. Proverbs 27:9 (KJV)

The Book of Proverbs is a collection of wise sayings and instructions, traditionally attributed to King Solomon. It offers practical guidance for daily living and addresses relationships, wisdom, diligence, and character. In this verse the writer uses the pleasant fragrance of ointment and perfume as a vivid picture of the joy that genuine friendship can bring.

In ancient times ointments and perfumes were highly valued for their fragrance, luxury, and refreshing qualities. Their pleasant aroma was associated with beauty and delight, making them a fitting metaphor for something that lifts the heart.

The “sweetness of a man’s friend” refers to the wise and sincere advice, support, and companionship that a true friend offers. Just as a fragrant perfume brings pleasure, a friend’s counsel can bring joy, comfort, and refreshment to the heart.

The phrase “hearty counsel” in the verse underscores the depth and sincerity of the advice given. Draft 3 expands this idea by describing the counsel as “wise counsel,” emphasizing that true friendship involves trustworthy guidance that comes from the depths of the heart, rooted in care and a desire for the other’s well‑being.

Application: Proverbs 27:9 reminds us of the value of authentic friendship. A good friend provides counsel that is heartfelt, honest, and beneficial, bringing encouragement and renewal to our spirits. The verse calls us to cultivate relationships based on trust, love, and shared values, and to appreciate the wise counsel of those who genuinely care for our well‑being.

Spiritual significance: While the primary focus is human friendship, many Christians see the verse pointing to the ultimate Friend, Jesus Christ. Scripture describes Him as a friend who sticks closer than a brother (Proverbs 18:24). His counsel, revealed in the Bible, brings true joy, peace, and refreshment to our souls, satisfying the deepest longings of the heart.

In summary, Proverbs 27:9 teaches that sincere friendship and wise, hearty counsel are as delightful to the heart as the finest ointment and perfume. It encourages us to cherish authentic friendships, seek godly advice, and ultimately rely on the friendship of Christ, whose presence brings lasting joy and refreshment to our hearts.
