Listen to this article

“If a ruler hearken to lies, all his servants are wicked.”

Context:If a ruler hearken to lies, all his servants are wicked. Proverbs 29:12 (KJV)

This verse from the book of Proverbs highlights the relationship between a ruler and their servants. It offers a valuable insight into the consequences that can arise when a leader chooses to listen to and believe falsehoods or deceitful information.

The importance of discernment:The verse emphasizes the need for rulers, or leaders in general, to exercise discernment and wisdom in their decision-making process. A ruler who is swayed by lies demonstrates a lack of discernment, which can lead to detrimental outcomes for their entire administration.

The influence of leadership:The verse suggests that the behavior and character of a ruler have a significant impact on those under their authority. When a leader is receptive to lies and misinformation, it can create an environment where dishonesty is tolerated or even encouraged. Consequently, the subordinates or servants of such a ruler may adopt corrupt practices, becoming deceitful and wicked themselves.

The responsibility of leaders:Leaders have a responsibility to seek truth and make informed decisions for the well-being of their people. By giving credence to lies, a ruler not only jeopardizes their own reputation but also endangers the integrity and moral fabric of their entire administration. A ruler who acts with integrity, on the other hand, sets a positive example for their subordinates, fostering an environment of trust and righteousness.

The importance of trustworthy counsel:This verse also underscores the significance of surrounding oneself with trustworthy advisors and counselors. A ruler who values honesty and truthfulness in their advisors can make more informed decisions and avoid being led astray by falsehoods.
