Proverbs 29:3

Listen to this article

“Whoso loveth wisdom rejoiceth his father: but he that keepeth company with harlots spendeth his substance.”

Context:Proverbs is a book in the Old Testament known for its practical wisdom and teachings on various aspects of life. It was traditionally attributed to King Solomon, who is renowned for his wisdom. Proverbs 29:3 is part of a collection of sayings in the book that highlight the consequences of one’s choices and actions.

Loving Wisdom:The verse begins by emphasizing the value of wisdom. Those who love wisdom bring joy to their father. In this context, “father” can refer to both a literal parent and a metaphorical authority figure. This highlights the honor and respect shown by children or subordinates who pursue and embody wisdom.

The Contrast:The second part of the verse presents a contrast to the preceding statement. It states that someone who keeps company with harlots (prostitutes) will squander their resources. This contrasts with the one who loves wisdom, implying that associating with immoral individuals leads to negative consequences and wastefulness.

Wisdom and Relationships:Proverbs frequently addresses the importance of choosing wise companions and avoiding the influence of those who may lead one astray. This verse reinforces that idea by illustrating the potential consequences of associating with individuals involved in immoral activities.

Application:The verse teaches us the importance of seeking wisdom and making wise choices in our relationships. It encourages us to consider the impact our associations may have on our lives and the lives of those who care for us. By valuing wisdom and making discerning decisions, we can bring joy to our parents or authority figures and avoid detrimental outcomes.
