Posted on 18 May at 15:11
Listen to this article

“My son, let not them depart from thine eyes: keep sound wisdom and discretion.”

Context:This verse is part of a larger passage in Proverbs 3 where King Solomon imparts wisdom to his son.

It emphasizes the value of wisdom and discretion in one’s life. Let’s break it down and explore its significance.

“My son”: This address by Solomon signifies the personal and intimate nature of the instruction. It conveys a sense of guidance and fatherly advice, reflecting the desire to pass down wisdom from one generation to the next.

“Let not them depart from thine eyes”: This phrase encourages the son to keep the teachings and instructions in constant view. It implies that wisdom should be held in high regard and should remain a focal point in one’s life. The idea is to consistently remember and apply the lessons learned.

“Keep sound wisdom and discretion”: Here, Solomon emphasizes the importance of actively preserving and safeguarding wisdom and discretion. “Sound wisdom” refers to good judgment, prudence, and discernment in decision-making, while “discretion” relates to the ability to discern what is appropriate or fitting in different situations. Both qualities are highly valued in the book of Proverbs.

The verse as a whole encourages the reader to maintain a steadfast focus on wisdom and discretion. It calls for a continuous pursuit of knowledge and discernment, rather than allowing them to slip away or be forgotten.

In a broader context, Proverbs is a book of practical wisdom, offering guidance for various aspects of life. It presents wisdom as a precious and valuable resource that can lead to a successful and fulfilling life. By following the teachings found within the book, individuals can develop a discerning mind and make wise choices.

Applying the message of Proverbs 3:21 to our lives today, we are encouraged to prioritise wisdom and discretion in all our decisions. This involves seeking knowledge, gaining understanding, and making choices that align with godly principles. By keeping wisdom and discretion in constant view, we can navigate life’s challenges with discernment and make choices that honour God and bless others.

Ultimately, Proverbs 3:21 serves as a reminder to value wisdom and discretion as essential virtues, guiding us in our journey to live a life of purpose and righteousness.
