Proverbs 30:11

“There is a generation that curseth their father, and doth not bless their mother.”

Proverbs 30:11 (KJV) says: “There is a generation that curseth their father, and doth not bless their mother.”

This verse is a part of a collection of sayings attributed to Agur, the son of Jakeh, as recorded in Proverbs 30. Agur shares his observations and insights, which contain wisdom for daily living. In this particular verse, Agur highlights the dishonorable behaviour of a certain generation who curse their father and do not bless their mother.

Understanding the context:It’s important to understand the context of this verse within the broader chapter of Proverbs 30. Agur begins this chapter by acknowledging his own limitations and seeking wisdom and understanding from God (Proverbs 30:1-6). He then proceeds to offer various wise sayings and observations about life and human nature.

Honouring parents:The fifth commandment given by God in Exodus 20:12 and reiterated by Jesus in Matthew 19:19 instructs us to honour our father and mother. Honouring parents involves showing them respect, obeying their guidance (while it aligns with God’s principles), caring for them in their old age, and speaking well of them. However, the verse in question speaks of a generation that does the opposite.

Generational disobedience:The verse implies a pattern of disobedience and dishonour within a specific generation. This generation is characterised by their failure to honour their parents through their words and actions. They curse their fathers, expressing disrespect and possibly harbouring anger or bitterness towards them. Additionally, they fail to bless their mothers, neglecting to speak words of love, appreciation, and affirmation.

Consequences of dishonouring parents:The Bible often emphasises the importance of honouring one’s parents. Proverbs 20:20 warns that cursing or insulting one’s father or mother will result in one’s lamp being extinguished in utter darkness. Disobedience and dishonour towards parents can lead to a breakdown in family relationships, the loss of blessings, and spiritual and emotional consequences.

Applying the wisdom:This verse serves as a reminder of the significance of honouring parents, regardless of the generation we belong to. As believers, we are called to show respect, love, and gratitude to our parents. This involves speaking well of them, supporting them, and actively blessing them with our words and actions.
