Listen to this article

“The eye that mocketh at his father, and despiseth to obey his mother, the ravens of the valley shall pick it out, and the young eagles shall eat it.”

Context:The book of Proverbs is a collection of wisdom literature attributed to King Solomon. It contains practical advice and teachings on various aspects of life, including wisdom, righteousness, relationships, and moral conduct. Proverbs 30 is attributed to Agur, the son of Jakeh, and contains additional wise sayings and reflections.

Understanding the verse:Proverbs 30:17 uses vivid imagery to convey a strong message. It describes the severe consequences of disrespecting one’s parents. The verse uses metaphorical language to emphasize the gravity of the offence.

  • Importance of honouring parents:The Bible places great importance on honouring one’s parents. In the Ten Commandments, God commands His people to honour their father and mother (Exodus 20:12). This commandment reflects the significance of parental authority and the role of parents in nurturing and guiding their children.
  • Consequences of disrespect:Proverbs 30:17 presents a graphic picture of the consequences of mocking one’s father and despising obedience to one’s mother. The mention of ravens and eagles picking out the eye signifies the severe and destructive outcomes that may befall those who dishonour their parents.
  • Symbolic interpretation:The imagery of the ravens and young eagles can be understood symbolically. Ravens are scavengers known for feeding on carrion, while eagles are known for their predatory nature. This symbolism suggests that those who disrespect their parents will experience spiritual and moral decay, as well as become vulnerable to destructive influences.

Lessons for life:This verse serves as a warning against rebellion, disrespect, and disobedience towards parents. It teaches us to value and honour the authority and guidance of our parents. When we disregard their wisdom and commands, we risk negative consequences and spiritual harm.

Application:As believers, it is essential to honour and respect our parents, regardless of their imperfections. Honouring our parents extends beyond childhood and into adulthood. It involves listening to their counsel, appreciating their sacrifices, and treating them with kindness and love. By doing so, we align ourselves with God’s commandments and experience the blessings associated with honouring our parents.
