Proverbs 4:15

Posted on 18 May at 14:11
Listen to this article

“Avoid it, pass not by it, turn from it, and pass away.”

Context:Proverbs is a book of wisdom in the Bible, attributed to King Solomon. It contains practical teachings for living a righteous and wise life. In Proverbs 4, Solomon imparts wisdom to his sons, encouraging them to embrace wisdom and avoid the path of the wicked.

Avoidance:The verse begins with the admonition to “avoid it.” The “it” refers to the path of the wickedness mentioned in the previous verses. The wisdom here is to deliberately stay away from any situation, activity, or company that can lead one astray from the path of righteousness.

Active Decision:The verse continues with three more actions: “pass not by it, turn from it, and pass away.” These words emphasize the need for intentional and purposeful action to avoid the path of wickedness. It is not enough to simply refrain from participating in wickedness; one must actively choose to distance oneself from it and turn in the opposite direction.

Practical Application:The instruction in this verse can be applied to various areas of our lives. It calls us to be discerning and proactive in avoiding temptations, evil influences, and situations that can compromise our integrity or lead us astray. This includes avoiding places, activities, and even relationships that can have a negative impact on our spiritual well‑being.

Spiritual Significance:The broader spiritual significance of this verse lies in the contrast between the path of righteousness and the path of wickedness. Throughout the book of Proverbs, the path of righteousness is associated with wisdom, godliness, and blessings, while the path of wickedness leads to destruction and negative consequences. By avoiding the path of wickedness, we position ourselves to receive the abundant life and blessings that come from following God’s ways.

Application to Christ‑followers:As Christians, we can also apply this verse by recognizing that our ultimate goal is to follow Jesus Christ. We are called to imitate His life and teachings and avoid any paths or behaviors that contradict His teachings. By intentionally turning away from sin and pursuing righteousness, we align ourselves with Christ and His purposes.
