Listen to this article

“For I give you good doctrine, forsake ye not my law.”

Context:Proverbs is a book of wisdom literature in the Old Testament, attributed to King Solomon. It contains practical advice for living a wise and righteous life. The verse in question is part of a larger passage where Solomon imparts wisdom to his son, emphasizing the importance of acquiring wisdom and understanding.

Good doctrine:The verse begins with the statement, “For I give you good doctrine.” Here, “doctrine” refers to teaching or instruction. Solomon is assuring his son that the guidance and wisdom he is about to impart are reliable and valuable. The wisdom offered in Proverbs is based on the fear of the Lord and practical insights gained through experience.

Forsake not my law:The verse concludes with the exhortation, “forsake ye not my law.” “Law” in this context refers to the instruction or teachings of God. Solomon urges his son not to abandon or disregard the principles and commandments given by God. It emphasizes the importance of maintaining a steadfast commitment to following God’s ways.

Application:This verse encourages believers to value and embrace godly wisdom and instruction. It reminds us that the teachings of God are reliable and beneficial for our lives. We are called not to forsake God’s law but rather to diligently seek wisdom, understanding, and obedience to His commandments.

  • Importance of wisdom:Throughout the book of Proverbs, there is a recurring theme of the value of wisdom. It is presented as something to be cherished, pursued, and applied in daily life. Wisdom helps us make right decisions, avoid pitfalls, and live in a way that pleases God and brings blessing. Proverbs 4:7 further emphasizes this: “Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom: and with all thy getting, get understanding.”

In summary, Proverbs 4:2 urges us to embrace and value the good doctrine and teachings found in God’s Word. It reminds us not to forsake His law but to diligently seek wisdom and understanding. By doing so, we can navigate life’s challenges and live in a way that is pleasing to God.
