“Get wisdom, get understanding: forget it not; neither decline from the words of my mouth.”

Get wisdom, get understanding: forget it not; neither decline from the words of my mouth. Proverbs 4:5 (KJV)

Proverbs is a book in the Old Testament that contains wisdom literature attributed primarily to King Solomon. It offers practical advice and moral teachings on various aspects of life. Proverbs 4:5 highlights the importance of seeking wisdom and understanding.

The pursuit of wisdom:The verse begins with the imperative command, “Get wisdom.” This indicates that wisdom is not something to be passively acquired but rather pursued actively. It implies that wisdom is valuable and worth the effort to obtain. In the biblical context, wisdom refers to godly knowledge and discernment.

The pursuit of understanding:The second part of the verse states, “get understanding.” Alongside wisdom, understanding is also emphasized. Wisdom and understanding are closely related but not identical. While wisdom involves knowing what is right and true, understanding goes deeper into comprehending the significance and application of that knowledge.

Remembering and holding on to wisdom:The verse continues, “forget it not.” This serves as a reminder not to neglect or abandon the pursuit of wisdom and understanding. It suggests that wisdom should be cherished and kept at the forefront of one’s mind. We are encouraged to consistently seek wisdom and not allow it to slip from our thoughts or actions.

Remaining faithful to God’s teachings:The final part of the verse advises, “neither decline from the words of my mouth.” This emphasizes the importance of staying steadfast in the teachings of wisdom. In the context of Proverbs, “the words of my mouth” likely refers to the wise counsel and instruction contained within the book. It encourages readers to stay committed to godly wisdom and not deviate from the path of righteousness.

Overall, Proverbs 4:5 underscores the significance of actively pursuing wisdom and understanding, remembering their value, and remaining faithful to the teachings of wisdom. It encourages individuals to seek godly knowledge and discernment, recognizing that wisdom is a precious and transformative asset in navigating life’s challenges.
