He shall die without instruction, and in the greatnesse of his folly he shal goe astray. Proverbs 5:23 (KJV)

“He shall die without instruction; and in the greatness of his folly he shall go astray.” Let’s delve into a Bible study on Proverbs 5:23, which is written in the King James Version: This verse is part of a larger passage in Proverbs 5 that focuses on the consequences of immorality and the importance of faithfulness in marriage. The chapter is written as a warning against the seductive allure of adultery and the disastrous consequences that follow. Proverbs is a book of wisdom literature, written primarily by King Solomon, who was known for his God‑given wisdom. The book addresses various aspects of life, providing practical advice for godly living.

The consequence of disregarding instruction: The verse begins with the statement, “He shall die without instruction.” It refers to a person who fails to heed the wisdom and guidance of God’s instruction. The word “instruction” here refers to the correction, discipline, and guidance provided by God through His Word, His commandments, and the teachings of wise individuals. By neglecting or rejecting this instruction, the individual is left to face the consequences of their actions.

The second part of the verse states, “and in the greatness of his folly, he shall go astray.” This phrase emphasizes the foolishness and lack of wisdom in pursuing a path of immorality. It describes the person who is enticed by temptation, lured by the desires of the flesh, and chooses to deviate from the righteous and godly path. The verse uses strong language to emphasize the severity of the consequences. It speaks of the spiritual death and loss of divine guidance and protection that result from rejecting instruction. While it mentions destruction rather than literal physical death, it primarily speaks about spiritual ruin and the loss of divine guidance and protection. Going astray implies being led away from the righteous path, experiencing confusion, spiritual emptiness, and being disconnected from God’s blessings.

Proverbs 5:23 serves as a cautionary reminder to seek wisdom and live a life of moral integrity. It warns against the allure of immorality and the dire consequences it brings. By embracing God’s instruction and following His ways, we can avoid the destructive path of foolishness and remain aligned with His purposes.
