Proverbs 6:4

Posted on 18 May at 15:11
Listen to this article

“Give not sleep to thine eyes, nor slumber to thine eyelids.”

Context:Proverbs is a book of wisdom literature in the Old Testament, written primarily by King Solomon. It offers practical advice and guidance for living a wise and righteous life. Proverbs 6:4 is part of a section where the author warns against laziness, specifically in the context of financial responsibility.

A Call to Diligence:In this verse, the author urges the reader not to give in to laziness or a lack of initiative. The phrase "Give not sleep to thine eyes, nor slumber to thine eyelids" emphasizes the importance of being diligent and proactive in pursuing one’s responsibilities and goals. It serves as a reminder to avoid being complacent or idle.

Rejecting Slothfulness:The Bible consistently emphasizes the value of hard work and diligence. This verse echoes the sentiment found in other passages, such as Proverbs 10:4, which states, "He becometh poor that dealeth with a slack hand: but the hand of the diligent maketh rich." The call to reject sleep and slumber signifies a rejection of laziness and a commitment to being industrious and responsible.

Application to Various Areas of Life:While this verse specifically addresses the importance of avoiding laziness in financial matters, its message can be applied more broadly to different aspects of life. It encourages us to be diligent in our work, studies, relationships, and spiritual pursuits. It reminds us to seize opportunities, make the most of our time, and not allow distractions or complacency to hinder our progress.

Balance and Rest:While Proverbs 6:4 emphasizes the importance of avoiding laziness, it is essential to note that the Bible also teaches the significance of rest and balance in life. God designed a rhythm of work and rest, as seen in the creation account in Genesis. Therefore, this verse should not be understood as advocating for a constant state of busyness or neglecting proper rest. Rather, it encourages us to avoid laziness and the squandering of time.
