Hearken vnto me now therefore, O ye children, and attend to the words of my mouth. Proverbs 7:24 (KJV)

Proverbs is a book of wisdom in the Old Testament, attributed mainly to King Solomon. It consists of practical advice and teachings on various topics, including relationships, morality, work ethic, and the fear of the Lord.

Proverbs 7 describes the dangers of falling into the traps of seduction and immorality. The opening verse of Proverbs 7 states: “My son, keep my words, and lay up my commandments with thee.” This passage calls for attentive listening and careful adherence to wisdom, emphasizing the importance of internalizing divine instruction to navigate life’s challenges.

The wisdom presented in Proverbs is intended for all who seek understanding, though its language often addresses youth as particularly vulnerable to moral pitfalls. By heeding these teachings, individuals can avoid destructive choices and align their lives with godly principles.

Audience: The verse begins with the phrase “O ye children,” which suggests that the intended audience is young and inexperienced individuals. However, the wisdom in Proverbs is applicable to people of all ages.

The call to listen: The opening exhortation “Hearken unto me now therefore” emphasizes the importance of paying attention and heeding the words of wisdom. It invites the reader to listen attentively, indicating that what follows is crucial for understanding and living a righteous life.

Wisdom’s plea: The phrase “O ye children” not only emphasizes the audience but also serves as an expression of the wisdom’s plea for the young to take heed. It highlights the caring and compassionate nature of wisdom, calling the inexperienced to gain understanding and avoid the pitfalls of life.

Attentiveness: The second part of the passage says, “attend to the words of my mouth.” This statement further emphasizes the need for attentiveness and active engagement with the wisdom being shared. It suggests that true understanding and transformation occur when we give careful attention to the words of wisdom.

Practical application: The passage encourages the reader to apply the wisdom they receive to their daily lives. The words of wisdom in Proverbs are meant to guide and direct one’s behaviour, decision‑making, and interactions with others. By attending to the words of wisdom, individuals can avoid the consequences of unwise choices and lead lives that are pleasing to God.

(Note: The quoted phrase reflects the style and themes of Proverbs but does not appear verbatim as a single verse in the biblical text.)
