Proverbs 8:14

Posted on 18 May at 15:10
Listen to this article

“Counsel is mine, and sound wisdom: I am understanding; I have strength.”

Context:This verse is a part of a longer passage in Proverbs 8 where wisdom is personified and speaks as if it were a person. In this section, wisdom is portrayed as a valuable and desirable attribute.

First, the verse begins with the statement, “Counsel is mine, and sound wisdom.” Here, wisdom claims ownership of counsel and sound wisdom. This implies that true wisdom originates from God, as wisdom is often associated with divine insight and understanding. Throughout the book of Proverbs, wisdom is personified as a virtuous woman, and her teachings are highly praised and sought after.

The second part of the verse states, “I am understanding; I have strength.” Here, wisdom asserts that it possesses understanding and strength. Understanding refers to the ability to discern and comprehend, while strength implies the capacity to act with power and effectiveness. In essence, wisdom is portrayed as possessing the qualities needed to make wise decisions and carry them out successfully.

The broader context of Proverbs emphasizes the importance of seeking wisdom. The book is filled with practical advice for living a righteous and fruitful life. It contrasts the way of wisdom with the way of foolishness, urging readers to pursue understanding and discernment.

Proverbs 8 presents wisdom as a valuable and trustworthy guide. It encourages individuals to listen to wisdom’s teachings, embrace its counsel, and walk in its paths. By doing so, they can acquire knowledge, understanding, and sound judgment, which will lead to a prosperous and blessed life.

As believers, this verse reminds us that wisdom is not merely an intellectual pursuit but is rooted in God Himself. True wisdom comes from aligning our thoughts and actions with God’s principles and seeking His guidance in all aspects of life. It emphasises the importance of seeking counsel and sound wisdom in decision-making, recognising that our own understanding may be limited and fallible.

In summary, Proverbs 8:14 (KJV) highlights the ownership of wisdom over counsel and sound wisdom. It emphasises the understanding and strength possessed by wisdom, which are essential for making wise choices. This verse encourages believers to seek God’s wisdom in their lives and underscores the importance of embracing divine counsel to lead a righteous and fruitful existence.
