Listen to this article

“Hear; for I will speak of excellent things; and the opening of my lips shall be right things.”

Context:Proverbs is a book in the Old Testament known for its wisdom literature. It contains practical advice on various topics, such as character, relationships, work, and righteousness. Proverbs 8 is a personification of wisdom, where wisdom speaks in the first person.

Seeking Wisdom:The verse begins with an invitation to listen attentively. Wisdom calls out to people, urging them to pay close attention to the words being spoken. This highlights the importance of actively seeking wisdom in our lives. It implies that wisdom is not hidden but available for those who are willing to listen and receive it.

Excellent Things:The verse promises that wisdom will speak of “excellent things.” Wisdom does not offer mere opinions or empty words but imparts insights and truths that are valuable and of the highest quality. It emphasizes that seeking wisdom leads to understanding and discernment of what is truly excellent.

Righteous Speech:Wisdom declares that the opening of her lips shall be “right things.” This signifies that wisdom’s words are trustworthy, morally upright, and aligned with God’s truth. It underscores the importance of using our words wisely and speaking truthfully, avoiding deceit or falsehood. Wisdom guides us in choosing the right words and living with integrity.

Application:Proverbs 8:6 encourages us to actively listen and seek wisdom in our lives. We should be attentive to the wisdom found in God’s Word, through prayer, and through the counsel of godly individuals. Wisdom helps us navigate life’s challenges, make sound decisions, and live in a way that honors God and benefits others.

  • Jesus as Wisdom:In the New Testament, the apostle Paul refers to Jesus Christ as “the wisdom of God” (1 Corinthians 1:24). As believers, we recognize Jesus as the embodiment of divine wisdom. Therefore, when we seek wisdom, we ultimately seek a relationship with Jesus and align ourselves with His teachings.

In conclusion, Proverbs 8:6 emphasizes the importance of actively seeking wisdom, which offers excellent and righteous guidance for our lives. By listening attentively and aligning ourselves with God’s wisdom, we can make wise choices, speak truthfully, and live in a way that honors God and blesses others.
