Psalms 51:12

Posted on 18 May at 15:16

“Restore unto me the joy of thy salvation; and uphold me with thy free spirit.”

Certainly! Let’s dive into a Bible study on Psalm 51:12 from the King James Version.

Psalm 51:12 (KJV) says:

“Restore unto me the joy of thy salvation; and uphold me with thy free spirit.”

1. Context:

Context: Psalm 51 is attributed to King David and is considered a penitential psalm. David composed this psalm after the prophet Nathan confronted him about his adultery with Bathsheba and the subsequent murder of her husband, Uriah. In this psalm, David acknowledges his sins and pleads for forgiveness and restoration.

2. Restoration of Joy:

Restoration of Joy: David begins by asking God to restore to him the joy of His salvation. This plea reveals David’s deep desire to regain the spiritual joy and intimacy he once had with God. Sin had separated him from that joy, and now he seeks reconciliation and renewal.

3. Joy in Salvation:

Joy in Salvation: The phrase “the joy of thy salvation” emphasizes the source of David’s joy-God’s saving grace. David recognizes that true joy can only be found in a right relationship with God, experiencing His forgiveness and salvation. It reminds us that our joy is not based on circumstances but on the eternal salvation found in God alone.

4. Upheld by the Free Spirit:

Upheld by the Free Spirit: David also requests that God uphold him with His free spirit. This phrase can be understood in two ways:

  • a) Divine Assistance: David appeals to God’s Holy Spirit, asking for His guidance, support, and strength to live a righteous life. He recognizes his need for God’s sustaining power and a transformed heart.
  • b) A Willing Spirit: Another interpretation is that David desires a willing and obedient spirit. He seeks to be filled with the Spirit of God, desiring to align his will with God’s will and walk in obedience to His commands.

5. Application:

Application: Psalm 51:12 encourages us to seek restoration and renewal in our relationship with God. Like David, when we recognize our sins and shortcomings, we can turn to God, asking Him to restore our joy and provide the strength we need to live according to His purposes. We should remember that God is always ready to forgive and restore those who genuinely seek Him.
