Revelation 1:18

Posted on 18 May at 14:22
Listen to this article

“I am he that liveth, and was dead; and, behold, I am alive for evermore, Amen; and have the keys of hell and of death.”

This verse is part of the vision that the apostle John had on the island of Patmos, where he received the revelation from Jesus Christ. In this specific verse, Jesus Himself is speaking and revealing His identity and authority.

"I am he that liveth, and was dead"; This statement emphasizes the deity and the humanity of Jesus. He declares that He is the one who lives, indicating His eternal nature as the Son of God. Furthermore, He states that He was once dead, referring to His crucifixion and subsequent resurrection. Jesus’ death on the cross was a pivotal event that accomplished salvation for all who believe in Him.

"And, behold, I am alive for evermore"; Jesus proclaims His victory over death. He conquered the grave and rose from the dead, displaying His power over sin and offering eternal life to those who trust in Him. His resurrection is a central event in Christianity, representing hope, redemption, and the promise of everlasting life.

"Amen"; This word is an affirmation or agreement, often used to express certainty or truth. In this context, it signifies the absolute certainty and truthfulness of Jesus’ statements. What He declares about Himself is trustworthy and reliable.

"And have the keys of hell and of death"; Jesus claims to possess the keys of Hades (commonly understood as hell) and of death. Keys symbolize authority and control. By having the keys, Jesus asserts His power and sovereignty over the realms of death and the afterlife. This means that He has the ultimate authority to judge and determine the eternal destiny of every person.

Revelation 1:18 is a powerful declaration of Jesus’ identity as the eternal, living Savior who overcame death and holds dominion over the spiritual realm. It speaks to His ability to grant eternal life to those who believe in Him and highlights His role as the ultimate judge. This verse reminds believers of the hope and security they have in Christ and reinforces the importance of acknowledging His lordship in their lives.
