And shee being with childe, cried, trauailing in birth, and pained to be deliuered. Revelation 12:2 (KJV)

The book of Revelation is the final book of the Bible, written by the Apostle John while he was exiled on the island of Patmos. It presents a series of visions and prophetic messages concerning the end times, the return of Christ, and the ultimate triumph of God over evil.

In Revelation 12:2 the symbolic language is striking. The woman represents the people of God, particularly Israel, from whom the Messiah was prophesied to come. The same figure also comes to typify the Church, the body of believers who inherit the promises of God throughout the ages. The child she bears symbolizes Jesus Christ, the promised Messiah.

Initially the woman stands for Israel, the nation chosen to bring forth the Savior. As the narrative of Scripture unfolds, the image expands to include the Church, which now carries forward the covenant blessings and the mission of Christ.

The description that the woman is “crying, travailing in birth” conveys deep anticipation and longing for the coming of the Messiah. It portrays the intense pain and struggle associated with bringing forth something new and of eternal significance. The whole world, especially God’s people, eagerly awaited the arrival of the Saviour.

The phrase “pained to be delivered” emphasizes the severity of the woman’s labor pains. It reflects both the spiritual and physical hardships endured by God’s people throughout history as they await the fulfillment of divine promises. The image underscores the suffering and tribulation that accompany the process of redemption.

The birth of the child points to the incarnation of Jesus Christ, His earthly ministry, and ultimately His sacrificial death and resurrection. Through Him God fulfilled the covenant promise to send a Savior, securing salvation for all humanity.

For believers today, Revelation 12:2 serves as a reminder of the need for perseverance, faith, and hope amid trials. Just as the woman endured labor pains to bring forth the Messiah, Christians are called to endure hardships and remain steadfast, trusting that God’s promises will be realized in His perfect timing.

Overall, this verse highlights the anticipation, struggle, and ultimate fulfillment of God’s redemptive plan through the birth of Jesus Christ. It encourages believers to trust in God’s faithfulness even in difficult seasons and to rejoice in the hope and joy that flow from the salvation accomplished by Christ.
