Revelation 13:4

Posted on 18 May at 14:20

“And they worshipped the dragon which gave power unto the beast: and they worshipped the beast, saying, Who is like unto the beast? who is able to make war with him?”

Revelation 13 is a chapter that provides insight into the end times and the rise of powerful entities, symbolized as a beast and a dragon. In this verse, we see a description of people worshiping the dragon and the beast, expressing awe and admiration for their power.

To understand this verse better, it’s helpful to consider the broader context of Revelation. The book of Revelation was written by the apostle John whilst he was exiled on the island of Patmos. It contains visions and prophecies concerning the end times, providing a symbolic depiction of the spiritual battle between good and evil.

In Revelation 13, two main characters are introduced: the dragon and the beast. The dragon represents Satan or the devil, who is described as a great deceiver and the enemy of God. The beast, on the other hand, symbolises a powerful and oppressive worldly system, often associated with political or governmental authorities.

The worship mentioned in this verse is not a genuine worship of God but a misguided adoration of worldly power. It highlights the extent to which people can be deceived and enticed by the allure of authority and dominance, even to the point of exalting the forces aligned with evil.

The phrase “Who is like unto the beast? Who is able to make war with him?” expresses the idea that the beast seems invincible and unbeatable. It reflects the awe and fear the people have towards the beast’s power. However, this verse also sets the stage for the subsequent events in the book of Revelation, which reveal the ultimate triumph of God and the downfall of the beast and the dragon.

As a whole, Revelation 13:4 serves as a warning against idolizing worldly power and being deceived by appearances. It reminds believers to place their trust and allegiance in God alone, as only He has ultimate authority and power over all things, including the forces of evil.

In summary, Revelation 13:4 portrays the worship of the dragon and the beast, emphasising the deceptive allure of worldly power. It calls believers to remain steadfast in their faith and not be swayed by the temporary displays of authority, as God ultimately has the final victory over evil.
