Revelation 14:17
And another Angel came out of the Temple which is in heauen, he also hauing a sharpe sickle. Revelation 14:17 (KJV)
The book of Revelation, written by the Apostle John, is a prophetic book filled with visions and symbolic language. It unveils the final events leading up to the second coming of Jesus Christ and the establishment of His eternal kingdom. Revelation 14 is a chapter that describes several key scenes in the end times, including the visions of the Lamb and the 144,000, the three angels’ messages, and the harvest of the earth.
In this verse we encounter another angel who emerges from the temple in heaven. Throughout the book of Revelation, angels play significant roles as messengers of God’s judgment and deliverance. This particular angel is described as having a sharp sickle.
The temple mentioned in this verse refers to the heavenly sanctuary, the dwelling place of God. In the Old Testament the earthly temple was a symbol of God’s presence among His people; in Revelation the temple represents the heavenly reality and the dwelling place of God.
The verse describes an angel carrying out a divinely appointed task. The sickle symbolizes a harvesting tool used in God’s judgment process. In Revelation 14:17‑20 the angel participates in the harvest of the earth, where the sickle is used to gather both the wheat (representing the righteous) and the grapes (representing judgment). The sickle itself is not a weapon for killing but a symbol of divine harvest and separation.
The angel’s role is to execute God’s command, not to act independently. The imagery emphasizes God’s sovereignty in bringing about the culmination of history and the establishment of His kingdom, as the harvest separates the saved from the condemned and prepares the way for the final consummation of God’s redemptive plan.
