Listen to this article

“These are they which were not defiled with women; for they are virgins. These are they which follow the Lamb whithersoever he goeth. These were redeemed from among men, being the firstfruits unto God and to the Lamb.”

This verse is part of the larger context of the book of Revelation, which is the last book in the New Testament and contains apocalyptic visions and messages given to the apostle John. In this particular verse, John describes a group of people who are distinct and set apart for a special purpose.

Let’s break down the verse to better understand its meaning:

“These are they which were not defiled with women; for they are virgins.”: This statement is metaphorical and does not refer to literal sexual relationships. In the symbolic language of Revelation, the concept of being “defiled with women” represents spiritual purity and faithfulness to God. The term “virgins” here denotes those who have remained faithful and devoted to God, not being enticed or corrupted by false teachings or idolatry. It emphasizes their dedication to God’s truth and righteousness.

“These are they which follow the Lamb whithersoever he goeth.”: The Lamb refers to Jesus Christ, who is often depicted as a Lamb in the book of Revelation. This statement emphasizes the followers of Jesus who demonstrate unwavering loyalty and obedience to Him. They are committed to following His teachings and example, wherever it may lead them. It signifies a close relationship with Jesus and a willingness to submit to His guidance and authority.

“These were redeemed from among men, being the firstfruits unto God and to the Lamb.”: This phrase highlights the special status of this group. The term “redeemed” refers to the fact that they have been bought back or rescued by Jesus through His sacrificial death and resurrection. They have been saved from the power of sin and are now set apart for God’s purposes. The mention of “firstfruits” indicates that they are a select group chosen by God as an offering or representation of the larger harvest to come. They are a unique and valuable offering to both God and Jesus Christ.

Overall, Revelation 14:4 speaks of a group of faithful individuals who have maintained spiritual purity, are devoted followers of Jesus, and have been redeemed and set apart by God. They are characterised by their unwavering commitment to God’s truth and their willingness to faithfully follow Jesus, wherever He leads. It is a reminder of the importance of remaining loyal to God and being dedicated to living in righteousness and obedience.
