Revelation 17:16

Posted on 18 May at 14:19
Listen to this article

“And the ten horns which thou sawest upon the beast, these shall hate the whore, and shall make her desolate and naked, and shall eat her flesh, and burn her with fire.”

Context:The book of Revelation is a highly symbolic and apocalyptic book written by the apostle John. It contains visions and prophecies about the end times and the ultimate victory of God over evil. In this verse, John describes a vision where he sees a beast with ten horns and a “whore” riding upon it.

Symbolism of the Beast:The beast mentioned in this verse represents a powerful and oppressive political system or empire. Throughout the book of Revelation, the beast is associated with Satan and represents the antichrist or the embodiment of evil.

Symbolism of the Whore:The “whore” symbolizes a false religious system or spiritual deception. This entity is often interpreted as representing a corrupt and idolatrous religious institution that leads people astray from true faith and worship of God.

The Ten Horns:The ten horns on the beast represent ten kings or rulers who align themselves with the beast’s political system. These kings or rulers are given power and authority to rule, but ultimately they are under the influence and control of the beast.

Hatred and Desolation:In this verse, it is stated that the ten horns, representing the rulers aligned with the beast, will turn against the whore and bring about her downfall. This can be understood as a betrayal or a rejection of the false religious system by those who were previously in alliance with it. They will hate the whore and make her desolate and naked, indicating a complete destruction of her power and influence.

Symbolic Actions:The verse states that the horns will “eat her flesh” and “burn her with fire.” These actions symbolize the complete annihilation and destruction of the false religious system. The metaphorical language emphasizes the severity of the judgment that will befall the corrupt religious institution.

Interpretation:The specific identity of the whore mentioned in this verse has been the subject of debate among biblical scholars and theologians. Various interpretations have been proposed, including associations with ancient pagan Rome, false religions, or apostate Christian denominations. It is important to note that interpretations of the book of Revelation can vary, and it is advisable to consult various reputable sources and study the entire book in context.
