Revelation 18:12

Posted on 18 May at 11:26

The merchandise of gold, and siluer, and pretious stones, and of pearles, and fine linnen, and purple, and silke, and scarlet, and all Thine wood, and all maner vessels of Yuorie, and all maner vessels of most precious wood, and of brasse, and iron, and marble, Revelation 18:12 (KJV)

Revelation 18 describes the fall of Babylon, a symbolic representation of a great city that represents the world’s system of human civilization and its rebellion against God. The passage you mentioned, verse 12, is part of a larger description of the city’s decadence and the extent of its economic wealth and trade.

Merchandise of Gold, Silver, and Precious Stones: The mention of gold, silver, and precious stones highlights the abundance of wealth and luxury associated with Babylon. It represents the pursuit of material possessions and worldly treasures.

Pearls, Fine Linen, Purple, Silk, and Scarlet: These items signify opulence, luxury, and extravagance. They are associated with wealth and high social status.

Thyine Wood and Other Valuable Woods: Thyine wood is a type of fragrant wood, and other precious woods were also traded. These items further emphasize the extravagant nature of Babylon’s trade and commerce.

Vessels of Ivory: Ivory was a highly valued material in ancient times and was used to make various decorative and practical objects. The mention of ivory vessels highlights the city’s indulgence in luxury and the pursuit of wealth.

Vessels of Brass, Iron, Marble, and Other Metals: These materials represent a wide range of commodities, including household items and construction materials. They symbolize the extensive and diverse nature of Babylon’s economic activities.

Overall, this verse portrays the immense wealth and material abundance associated with Babylon, signifying the world’s preoccupation with material possessions, economic prosperity, and luxury. It serves as a warning against the allure of worldly wealth and the dangers of being consumed by the pursuit of material gain at the expense of spiritual values and righteousness.

It is important to note that the Book of Revelation is a highly symbolic and apocalyptic work, and its interpretation requires careful consideration of the context, literary genre, and other scriptural references. Many scholars and theologians have different interpretations of the book, so it is advisable to consult various commentaries and engage in further study to gain a comprehensive understanding of its message.
